The interaction of the presynaptic membrane proteins SNAP-25 and syntaxin with the synaptic vesicle protein synaptobrevin (VAMP) plays a key role in the regulated exocytosis of neurotransmitters. Clostridial neurotoxins, which proteolyze these polypeptides, are potent inhibitors of neurotransmission.
