The alpha 5 beta 1 integrin is a constitutively internalized fibronectin receptor. It contains in the cytoplasmic tail of its beta 1 subunit two NPXY sequences which have been proposed to mediate internalization. Indeed a NPXY motif constitutes the internalization signal for the Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and insulin receptors.
