Methylglyoxal (MG) is a highly reactive aldehyde that is produced endogenously during metabolism, and from exogenous sources like sugary food and cigarette smoke. Unless detoxified by glyoxalases, MG can readily react with DNA and proteins, generating characteristic glycation-derived lesions.
