Cardiomyocytes fail to regenerate after birth and respond to mitotic signals through cellular hypertrophy rather than cellular proliferation. Necrotic cardiomyocytes in the infarcted ventricular tissue are eventually replaced by fibroblasts, generating scar tissue. Cardiomyocyte loss causes localized systolic dysfunction.
