Abstract excerpt
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a complex degenerative disease of the retina. Dysfunction of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) occurs in early stages of AMD, and progressive RPE atrophy leads to photoreceptor death and visual impairments that ultimately manifest as geographic atrophy (GA), one of the late-stage forms of AMD.
