OBJECTIVE: Melatonin regulates the mammalian circadian rhythm and plays metabolic functions such as glucose homeostasis. Both melatonin receptors (MTNR1A and MTNR1B, encoded by the MTNR1A and MTNR1B genes, respectively) are expressed in pancreatic beta cells and mediate the glucometabolic roles of melatonin as well as insulin secretion.
