Xeroderma pigmentosum C (XPC) is a key initiator in the global genome nucleotide excision repair pathway in mammalian cells. Inherited mutations in the XPC gene can cause xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) cancer predisposition syndrome that dramatically increases the susceptibility to sunlight-induced cancers.
