The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR) system is a prokaryotic adaptive defense system against foreign nucleic acids. In the methanoarchaeon Methanosarcina mazei Gö1, two types of CRISPR-Cas systems are present (type I-B and type III-C).
