BACKGROUND: Activated factor V (FVa) is a potent procoagulant cofactor in the prothrombinase complex, whereas its precursor factor V (FV) stimulates the inhibition of factor Xa (FXa) by tissue factor pathway inhibitor-α (TFPIα), presumably by promoting TFPIα binding to phospholipids.
