Shape complementarity between close-packed residues plays a critical role in the amyloid aggregation process. Here, we probe such "steric zipper" interactions in amyloid-β (Aβ40), whose aggregation is linked to Alzheimer's disease, by replacing natural residues by their stereoisomers.
