Alkanols are small aliphatic compounds that inhibit voltage-gated K(+) (K(v)) channels through a yet unresolved gating mechanism. K(v) channels detect changes in the membrane potential with their voltage-sensing domains (VSDs) that reorient and generate a transient gating current.
