Bypass of the d,d-transpeptidase activity of penicillin-binding proteins by an l,d-transpeptidase (Ldtfm) results in resistance to ampicillin and glycopeptides in Enterococcus faecium M9, a mutant obtained by nine consecutive selection steps.
