β-Lactamases and penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) have evolved from a common ancestor. β-Lactamases are enzymes that degrade β-lactam antibiotics, whereas PBPs are involved in the synthesis and processing of peptidoglycan, which forms an elastic network in the bacterial cell wall.
