The DNA damage-inducible SOS response of Escherichia coli includes an error-prone translesion DNA replication activity responsible for SOS mutagenesis. In certain recA mutant strains, in which the SOS response is expressed constitutively, SOS mutagenesis is manifested as a mutator activity.
