When activated by high NaCl, tonicity-responsive enhancer-binding protein/osmotic response element-binding protein (TonEBP/OREBP) increases transcription of osmoprotective genes. High NaCl activates TonEBP/OREBP by increasing its phosphorylation, nuclear localization, and transactivating activity.
