PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Tumorigenic cells can co-opt normal functions of nonmalignant hematopoietic cells, promoting tumor progression. Recent mouse and human studies indicate that mast cells underpin inflammation in the plexiform neurofibroma microenvironment of neurofibromatosis type 1.
