BACKGROUND: In 1952, Alan Turing suggested that spatial patterns could arise from homogeneous starting conditions by feedback amplification of stochastic fluctuations. One example of such self-organization, called symmetry breaking, involves spontaneous cell polarization in the absence of spatial cues.
