Abacavir is a potent nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor approved for the treatment of HIV infection. Approximately 5-8% of Caucasian patients receiving abacavir develop a hypersensitivity reaction, characterized by rash, fever and, occasionally, multisystemic involvement.
