BACKGROUND: Overexpression of KIT, a tyrosine kinase receptor protein encoded by the proto-oncogene c-kit, is observed in human neoplasms such as gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), myeloproliferative disorders, melanoma and seminoma.
