The pentraxin C-reactive protein (CRP), an innate immune system opsonin which binds nuclear debris and apoptotic bodies, may protect against autoimmunity. A relative deficiency of CRP levels in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) might contribute to altered handling of self-antigens.
