Large studies on the genetics of common rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, have identified multiple polymorphisms related to disease susceptibility, including peptidylarginine deiminase 4 (PADI4) and protein tyrosine phosphatase N22 (PTPN22).
