BACKGROUND: Paraoxonase (PON-1) is a high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-associated enzyme that may protect against cardiovascular disease (CVD), because it hydrolyses oxidized phospholipids of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and therefore prevents the detrimental effects on the arterial wall.
