The slow Wallerian degeneration gene (Wld(S)) delays Wallerian degeneration and axon pathology for several weeks in mice and rats. Interestingly, neuronal cell death is also delayed in some in vivo models, most strikingly in the progressive motoneuronopathy mouse.
