We have developed a partial kinetic theory for the gating of murine nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) expressed in Xenopus oocytes and have used this theory to characterize the role of the gamma subunit in single-channel behavior. Permeation and gating were found to be largely unaffected in AChRs produced in oocytes when the gamma subunit transcript was omitted from microinjections of AChR subunit RNAs....
