OBJECTIVE: To test for an association between apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotypes and the occurrence of severe sepsis in an elective surgical cohort. DESIGN: Prospective, observational, single cohort study. SETTING: Sixteen-bed surgical intensive care unit (ICU) at a university hospital.
