Senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) are the prominent lesions in the brain of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. NFT are mainly composed of an abnormally phosphorylated form of tau protein, which has lost its function to bind microtubules and promote their assembly.
