Utilizing a screening method designed for the identification of genes involved with enhanced protein secretion in Saccharomyces cerevisiae we identified a gene, which we named PSE-1 (Protein Secretion Enhancer). Overexpression of PSE-1 in a multi-copy plasmid, as shown by Northern hybridization, gave a fourfold enhancement in total protein secretion.
