The pncA genes in mycobacteria are responsible for the production of pyrazinamidase (PZase). In Mycobacterium tuberculosis, PZase hydrolyses pyrazinamide (PZA) to pyrazonic acid, a compound that possesses bactericidal activity against tubercle bacilli.
