BACKGROUND: Germline alterations in cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A (CDKN2A) are important genetic factors in familial predisposition to melanoma. Activating mutations of the NRAS proto-oncogene are among the most common somatic genetic alterations in cutaneous malignant melanomas.
