Overexpression of the oncogenic receptor tyrosine kinase ONC-Xmrk is the first step in the development of hereditary malignant melanoma in the fish Xiphophorus. However, overexpression of its proto-oncogene counterpart (INV-Xmrk) is not sufficient for the oncogenic function of the receptor.
