Transgenic mice having rapid accumulation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations specifically in the heart were created. These mice contained a transgene encoding a proofreading-deficient, mouse mitochondrial DNA polymerase (pol gamma) driven by the promoter for the cardiac-specific alpha-myosin heavy chain.
