AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes results mainly from T-cell-mediated autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells. Cytotoxic T lymphocytes destroy target cells via a perforin-based or Fas-based mechanism.
