Mutations of the receptor tyrosine kinase, Kit, or its ligand, mast growth factor (Mgf), affect three unrelated cell populations: melanocytes, germ cells, and mast cells. Kit signaling is required initially to prevent cell death in these lineages both in vitro and in vivo.
