Excitatory synaptic transmission in the human nervous system is mediated by α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptors (AMPARs), tetrameric ligand-gated ion channels localized in the excitatory post-synaptic membrane.
