Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), an often-fatal complication of pulmonary or systemic inflammation, has no cure. Hypoxemia is a defining feature, yet its impact on inflammation is often neglected. Patients with ARDS are monocytopenic early in the onset of the disease.
