<h4>Background</h4> Alpha-thalassemia/mental retardation, X-linked, or ATRX , is an autism susceptibility gene that encodes a chromatin remodeler. Mutations of ATRX result in the ATR-X intellectual disability syndrome and have been identified in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) patients.
