Steady state erythropoiesis produces new erythrocytes at a constant rate to replace senescent erythrocytes removed in the spleen and liver. Inflammation caused by infection or tissue damage skews bone marrow hematopoiesis, increasing myelopoiesis at the expense of steady state erythropoiesis.
