Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF α ), a pleiotropic cytokine, helps maintain a balance between proliferation and apoptosis in normal cells. This balance is often sacrificed in a diseased cell, such as that of a cancer, by preferring survival phenotype over apoptosis.
