Bordetella pertussis is the causative agent of whooping cough in humans, a disease that has recently experienced a resurgence. In contrast, Bordetella bronchiseptica infects the respiratory tract of various mammalian species, causing a range of symptoms from asymptomatic chronic carriage to acute illness.
