Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC) are the principal natural type I interferon producing dendritic cells. Neoplastic expansion of pDCs and pDC precursors leads to blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) and clonal expansion of mature pDCs has been described in chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML).
