Purifying selection is the removal of detrimental mutations. Nuclear DNA mutations are purged by removing mutant individuals, embryos, or germline cells. Because mtDNA is present in numerous copies per cell, purifying selection of mtDNA mutations introduces an additional layer of complexity.
