Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) comprise the largest subset of mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. These neoplasms differ histologically and immunohistochemically from typical leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas. Most GISTs express CD34 and CD117 (c-kit protein) but not desmin.
