Nitric oxide (NO) synthase (NOS)-containing cerebrocortical neurons degenerate in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and dementia, and in transgenic mice expressing a mutated superoxide dismutase gene (G93A) associated with familial ALS.
