Several features of the biology of mitochondria suggest that mitochondria might be susceptible to Muller's ratchet and other forms of evolutionary degradation: Mitochondria have predominantly uniparental inheritance, appear to be nonrecombining, and have high mutation rates producing significant deleterious variation.
