HLA-DQA1*0102/DQB1*0602 (DQ0602) is observed at a decreased frequency in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in different ethnic groups, suggesting a protective role for DQ0602. Analysis of overlapping peptides from human insulin found that insulin B(1-15) bound well to DQ0602 and exhibited a high degree of allelic specificity.
