Invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) occurs frequently in HIV-infected children and adults. Defects in complement function, opsonic capsular antibodies, and Fc receptor antibody-mediated phagocytosis could contribute to impaired host defense against Streptococcus pneumoniae.
