Proliferation of thyroid follicular cells is controlled by three intra-cellular cascades [cAMP, inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate (IP3)/Ca2+/diacylglycerol (DAG), and tyrosine kinases] that are activated by distinct extracellular signals and receptors.
