BACKGROUND: Threonine145/methionine145 dimorphism in platelet glycoprotein (GP) Ib alpha defines the human platelet antigen (HPA)-2 system that has been implicated in refractoriness to HLA-matched platelet transfusion and in neonatal immune thrombocytopenic purpura.
