Transfection of pgpA into Leishmania confers resistance to arsenite and antimonials. By gene targeting mediated by homologous recombination the two alleles of the pgpA gene of a L. tarentolae wild-type cell were disrupted sequentially with the neomycin and hygromycin phosphotransferase genes.
