Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) infected with the oncogenic retrovirus bovine leukemia virus (BLV) produce virus when cultured briefly. BLV can be transmitted in cocultures to adherent susceptible cells, which become infected, express viral proteins, and fuse into multinucleated syncytia several days later.
